The title and the truth

The title says "Best Young Sommelier." The truth is, it has made me feel more like a student than ever before.

Over the past few weeks, one question has come up more than any other:

"How does it feel?"

The honest answer?

It feels incredibly humbling.

It's an honour that I'm deeply grateful for, and one that reminds me just how many people have invested in my journey - from mentors and colleagues to producers, sponsors, judges, friends and family. This title belongs to far more people than just me.

Over the past few weeks, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on what comes next.

I've realised that a title doesn't create value - what you do with it does.

For me, that means continuing to build meaningful relationships across our industry, connecting sommeliers with one another, helping showcase South African wine to the world, and remaining a lifelong student of wine, hospitality and leadership.

If, through this journey, I can help one more person discover the quality of South African wine, inspire a young sommelier to chase their goals, or create a connection that otherwise wouldn't have happened, then I'll feel I've honoured this title.

This is only the beginning, and I'm excited to continue learning, sharing and giving back to an industry that has already given me so much.
